LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The man killed in a Shawnee neighborhood shooting has been identified as a Waggener High School football player.
The coroner says 19-year-old Tyson Gibbs has died of multiple gunshot wounds on Saturday. The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. near the Academy @ Shawnee on 38th Street.
Jefferson County Public Schools confirms he was a senior at Waggener High School and played on the football team. Waggener High mental health counselor Tangi Jones said Gibbs lost a sister to gun violence and had, himself, been previously shot. She said he dreamed of playing college football.
Waggener head coach Jordan Johnson posted on Twitter on Saturday, after learning of Gibbs' death. He said, "By far the worst part of coaching. I received the call I never want to receive, one of my son's from my team was murdered in west end. #hurt"
Johnson met Sunday with past and present players to talk about the loss.
Had a very special afternoon with some of our young men. We also had a surprise visit from Tyson's uncle joined us. It meant a lot to us! pic.twitter.com/eMcYsXVFq3
