Two suspects in jewelry store murder are captured by Fresno police
August 23, 2017
Two teens wanted in the Aug. 5 robbery and murder at the Stereo & DJ Outlet /Mari’s Jewelry Store were arrested Wednesday by Fresno police.
They were the last two identified suspects sought in the shooting death of Christopher Leon, 22, of Fresno. One person remains at large and is not yet identified.
Officers from the Fresno Police Department’s street violence tactical team continued following investigative leads when they arrived at the apartment complex in the 2200 block of North Marks Avenue.
At the door, they spoke with a woman suspected of harboring Angel Morelos, 18, the suspected shooter, but she denied having seen him for more than two weeks. She also said that nobody was in her home.
The street violence team members thought that she was being untruthful and returned by attempting to reach her at her residence, where they found Morelos and 17-year-old Angelo Sanchez. Both suspects came to the door and surrendered peacefully. Detectives were searching the apartment for additional evidence.
Police said they are considering charges against the woman who was harboring Morelos and Sanchez.
Morelos, 18, is the person believed responsible for the fatal shooting of Leon during the robbery.
On Aug. 5 about 7:14 p.m., Fresno police got a “ShotSpotter” notification at 4711 E. Kings Canyon Road and police were then called for a shooting victim at the store.
Homicide investigators learned that the suspects entered the business and looked at jewelry before trying to run out of the business with the goods.
That was when they were confronted by the store’s employees and a fight began. During the fight, one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and shot Leon before they escaped.
The suspects’ vehicle was later recovered and two juveniles were arrested nearby.Fresno Bee
