Springfield police investigate two shootings, no apparent injuries

July 25, 2015

ShotSpotter system indicated multiple gunshots in the area

SPRINGFIELD— Police flooded the Worthington Street — Stearns Square area minutes after the 2:00 a.m. closing time, when the city's ShotSpotter system indicated multiple gunshots in the area. Entertainment District patrons scattered and ducked as shots rang out.

Springfield Police Lt. Richard LaBelle said the city's acoustic gunfire location system indicated as many as 14 rounds had been fired.

Officers located a firearm in the parking lot directly across the street from 220 Worthington St, then fanned out and searched the area with flashlights to locate evidence. A number of spent shell casings from two different caliber weapons were found in clusters running across the parking lot, LaBelle said.

A citizen called police to report seeing one alleged shooter run and enter a white SUV then flee the area, but LaBelle said that information has not been confirmed. A witness at the scene told the Republican he saw a man with a gun run from the corner of the lot closest to Queenie's restaurant at 220 Worthington St., across to the intersection of Stearns Square and North Church Avenue. The witness said he was ducking as he watched the shooter and did not see a vehicle.

As officers processed the crime scene in the Stearns Square area, a loud, verbal confrontation with as many as 20 people broke out further down Worthington Street near Main Street, sending officers running to prevent that dispute from escalating into a physical fight.

The argument was quelled and the participants sent on their way.

Moments later a ShotSpotter activation at 133 St. James Avenue sent cruisers in that direction.

Police found that shots had been fired toward a house at that street number at approximately 2:25 a.m. Officers searched the area and collected evidence. Apparently three gunshots hit the house while a fourth round struck a Dodge Durango SUV parked in the driveway. Several spent shells casings were found as well.

A witness at the scene said he heard four shots fired.

There were no apparent injuries in either of the shootings.
