A 25-year-old city man is facing weapons charges following his arrest at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday on Revere Street just moments after gun shots were reported blocks away, police said.
David Reyes of Dickinson St., was charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and a firearms violation with three previous arrests for violent crime or drug offenses.
Springfield police spokesman Sgt. John Delaney said police were alerted by the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system at 4:22 a.m. of someone firing a single shot near 44 Revere St. Several officers were dispatched to the scene.
One minute later, the system notified police of another single gunshot being fired near 56 Grand Street, which is at the corner of Grand and Revere and a few hundred feet away from the first shooting, Delaney said.
There was no evidence that anyone was injured in either shooting, Delaney said
He said officer Patrick Denault, who was one of the officers responding to the scene, calculated that the shooter was heading down Revere toward Orange Street and proceeded to that block. There he spotted Reyes walking and drove toward him, Delaney said.
As Denault approached him, he could see Reyes toss a gun into some bushes.
Reyes was taken into custody, and the gun, a .380 semi-automatic, was recovered. Delaney said it had recently been fired.
Delaney said Reyes has prior arrests and convictions for possession and distribution of crack cocaine and for resisting arrest.
He was also awaiting trial for possession of heroin, cocaine and marijuana, each with intent to distribute.
Last July, Reyes and another man were arrested following a brief police chase on Allen Street on drugs and weapons charges. During the pursuit, a gun was tossed from the suspect vehicle.
He was charged then with possession of heroin with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of PCP with intent to distribute, carrying a firearm without a license and resisting arrest.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Springfield District Court.Mass Live
