WORCESTER – A Saturday night fight in the area of Water and Harrison streets led to the arrest of one man for gun possession, but police said a second man was able to scoop up the weapon and run from the scene.
The man who allegedly ran from the area with the gun will be charged with unlawful possession of a firearm once police locate him. Worcester Police did not identify him by name because he wasn't arrested at the scene.
A Worcester officer working a detail on Water Street was alerted to gunshots in the area by the gunshot detection system, ShotSpotter, around 1:53 a.m. Saturday. Another officer asked for help breaking up a fight nearby, in the area where the gunfire was detected, police said.
The officer saw a man, identified by police as Robert Cephas, 23, of Southbridge, running from the area with his arm tucked inside his pants, police said. Cephas got into a car, but the officer followed him, believing his was involved in the fight.
"The officer was also fearful that the male may a weapon due to the way he was running with his hand tucked down in his pants," police said. "In addition, the officer feared that this male may be connected to the ShotSpotter detection."
Cephas was in the backseat of the car and allegedly was covering his front waist with his hands, police said. The officer grabbed Cephas' arm in attempt to pull his hands away from his waist.
Police said Cephas refused to move his arms and struggled with the officer. Cephas was removed from the car, but no gun was found, police said.
"The officer was informed by several witnesses that they observed the whole incident," police said. "Witnesses stated that during the struggle, when the officer was attempting to remove Mr. Cephas from the vehicle, a gun was seen falling from the suspect and onto the ground."
Witnesses told the officer that another man grabbed the gun and ran off. Neither man had a license to carry a gun. The officer was able to identify the man who ran off with the weapon.
Cephas was charged with carrying a firearm without a license, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.
