ShotSpotter system alerts officers to shooting

May 29, 2016

ShotSpotter, a system that detects gunfire, alerted Rocky Mount police to a shooting Thursday before anyone called 911 to report the crime.

An 18-year-old male was walking along the 700 block of West Haven Boulevard when a man walked up and shot him, said Rocky Mount police Cpl. Mike Lewis. Police were alerted and responded to the scene before the victim called 911 to say he was on his way to Nash UNC Health Care.

“The shots fired notification system is a very important tool in law enforcement,” Lewis said. “Reports are routed right to officers in the area who often respond before anyone calls, as in this case.”

The suspect is described as a black man in jeans and a dark hooded sweatshirt.
