The ShotSpotter surveillance system alerted the department at 10:36 p.m. to shots fired in that block, Janvier said.

According to police radio reports that night, officers reported hearing more gunfire near the scene, received additional ShotSpotter alerts and got numerous 911 calls reporting shots fired.

New Castle County paramedics treated the injured man's right hand at the scene before he was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in fair condition, Janvier said.

Investigation confirmed the shooting occurred in the 800 block of Spruce St., Janvier said, but the only information available about the incident was that the shooter was described as a male wearing all dark clothing.Circumstances of the incident remain under investigation, Janvier said.
