Shooting leaves N.J. man in critical condition, police say

October 06, 2015

PATERSON — A 21-year-old man was in critical condition after he was shot in the city early Tuesday, authorities said.

Police found the city resident lying in the intersection at 12th Avenue and East 22 Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, according to Detective Lt. Patrick Murray.

The man was rushed to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, Murray said. The shooting was reported 2 a.m., about 26 hours after another shooting blocks away.

In that incident around midnight Monday, the city's ShotSpotter gunshot detection system alerted police to a shooting at 11th Avenue and East 19th Street, authorities said.

Officers found evidence of a shooting, but the victim was gone, police said. About 20 minutes after the call, the wounded 28-year-old city man showed up at the emergency room.

The man told investigators that he was walking on East 19th Street, near 11th Avenue, when he heard "numerous" shots, Murray added. He tried to run away, but was shot once in the leg.

The two shootings appeared to be unrelated, Murray said Tuesday.
