Pregnant woman wounded in drive-by shooting
August 25, 2015
A suspected drive-by shooting left a pregnant woman with a gunshot wound outside her home Monday night, Canton police say.
“We do not believe she was the intended target,” said Capt. Dave Davis, who heads the police department’s detective bureau. He declined to say who detectives believe was the target.
Police were alerted at 9:40 p.m. Monday by the city’s ShotSpotter system and by a caller to a report of shots fired in the 700 block of Newton Avenue NW.
They arrived to find the 19-year-old woman outside her home with a gunshot wound to her right arm, Davis said.
The woman, who is 7 weeks pregnant, was taken to Mercy Medical Center to be treated for the wound, which was not life-threatening, he said.
Davis said detectives believe someone in a moving vehicle shot her, but no description of a vehicle was released.
He asked Tuesday that anyone with information about the shooting should call detectives at 330-489-3144 or leave a tip on the city’s Tip411 system, which can be found at www.cantonohio.gov/police.CantonRep.com
