Fresno Police are crediting their new ShotSpotter system

Fresno Police are crediting their new ShotSpotter system with helping to find a shooting victim.

Officers were notified by ShotSpotter early Friday morning to gunfire near Belmont and Diana in Central Fresno. After they arrived on the scene, police followed a trail of shell casings in the street to a wounded man in a nearby alley.

Authorities say if not for the new system, it would have been much more difficult to find the victim.

"It's been very helpful, it's helped us located shell casings we wouldn't otherwise find. In doing so we were able to stumble across some witnesses," said Sgt. Steve Crawford, Fresno Police Department. "So overall it gives us a better aspect to solve cases with information we wouldn't get otherwise."

The wounded man was taken to Community Regional Medical Center. He is expected to survive.
