April 20, 2016

A Willingboro man is facing murder, robbery and weapons charges in connection with the April 8 shooting of a 52-year-old man, authorities said Tuesday.

Virgil Howard, 26, was arrested Monday and is being charged with murder, felony murder, robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and certain persons not to possess a firearm. He was located at a motel in Bristol, Pa. by U.S. Marshals and taken into custody, Acting Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri and Trenton Police Director Ernest Parrey Jr. said in a statement Tuesday.

Police say that on April 8 at approximately 9:08 p.m., Trenton police responded to Hermitage Avenue after gunshots were detected on Boudinot Street by the ShotSpotter detection system. When they arrived at the scene, police discovered the victim, 52-year-old Elliot Simon, with a gunshot wound to the chest, authorities said. Simon was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment and was pronounced dead a short time later, the prosecutor said.

Howard is being held on $1 million cash-only bail, authorities said.
