Man struck with birdshot early Monday outside South Peoria tavern

July 05, 2016

PEORIA — A 22-year-old man was shot in the back early Monday morning while he was near a South Peoria tavern.

Peoria police went to the 1412 SW Jefferson Ave. at about 2:40 a.m. after a call about a person shooting a gun. The ShotSpotter gunshot detection system indicated shots were fired at 318 S. New St. In both areas, police found no evidence.

But at the intersection of Howett and Linden streets, they found a man who was bleeding from the back of his head and back. The man told police he didn't know what happened or why he was bleeding.

It appears the victim was hit with bird shot from a shotgun as there were many small wounds on his head, back and neck. He was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police searched that area as well as the 900 block of Howett where there was another ShotSpotter alert.

Police made no arrests Tuesday.
