East Chicago man fatally shot while driving, police say

November 25, 2015

EAST CHICAGO | A 20-year-old East Chicago man was fatally shot while driving Saturday about a block from his home in the city's East Calumet section, officials said.

Ikeam Simmons suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, Lt. Marguerite Wilder said.

An officer on patrol about 3:47 p.m. responded to the 5000 block of Melville Avenue after the city's ShotSpotter technology indicated three shots were fired in that area, Wilder said.

The officer was flagged down by a person who said he heard the shots and saw a vehicle travel north through an alley and come to rest in an empty lot, Wilder said. The person told the officer the driver appeared to be wounded.

The officer located the vehicle near East 150th Street and Alexander Avenue and found the wounded Simmons, who was in the driver's seat, officials said.

Simmons was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, where he was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m., according to the Lake County coroner's office.

Gunshot damage was found in three locations on the vehicle, police said.

Simmons' family members told police he was not known to participate in illegal activity and they weren't sure why anyone would want to harm him, Wilder said.
