Common Council OKs gunshot location tech, major airport renovation

February 28, 2017

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Common Council Monday approved a pair of high-profile city projects introduced earlier this year.

The Council unanimously agreed to a one-year deal with Shotspotter Gunfire Location, Alert and Analysis Services for up to $300,000. It also OK'd a $49 million improvement at Hancock International Airport, to be mostly covered by New York State.

Mayor Stephanie Miner announced the deployment of ShotSpotter at her State of the City address in January.

The technology will allow Syracuse police to instantly pinpoint the location of gunshots in a certain neighborhood in the city. Miner said she expects to have it up and running by April.
