Canton police arrest victim of Shorb Avenue shooting

August 12, 2015

Police arrested a shooting victim shortly after shots were fired early Wednesday morning, and they’re looking for whoever shot him. Police believe Larry L. Woods, 37, of 818 Shorb Ave. NW, may have been involved in a gun battle, and they’re asking for the public’s help in locating the other gunman.

“We’re still investigating who shot him,” said Capt. Dave Davis, who heads the police department’s detective bureau. “We believe more than one person was firing shots. He may’ve been shooting at someone else who was shooting at him. We’re looking into that at this point.”

Police recovered no weapon. They had been called at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday to the 900 block of Shorb Avenue NW in response to a ShotSpotter alert.

Davis said officers found Woods with a gunshot wound to the right leg on a back porch of a home. Canton firefighter/paramedics took him to Aultman Hospital, where he was treated and released into police custody.

Woods already was wanted on warrants charging him with aggravated menacing, criminal damaging and discharging a firearm on or near prohibited premises — charges that stemmed from another previous incident, Davis said.

Stark County court records show warrants on those charges were issued on Monday. Details about the incident that led to them were not listed.

Court records also show that Woods went to prison last year for felony evidence tampering and in 2009 and 2010 for carrying concealed weapons. He also went to prison in 2010 for having weapons under disability and receiving stolen property, the court records show.

Detectives are asking that anyone with information about the Wednesday morning shootings to call them at 330-489-3144. Anonymous tips also may be sent through the Tip411 system, accessible through the city’s website at www.cantonohio.gov/police.
