CAMDEN – The city plans to add 90 cameras to its Eye in the Sky street surveillance system.

Council members voted Tuesday to introduce a resolution calling for the purchase of the cameras, with a final vote expected July 14. The $2.3 million purchase would be funded through bond anticipation notes, officials said Wednesday.

The city currently has 131 cameras monitored by the Camden County Police Department.

Earlier this month, Camden County’s freeholders approved a $600,000 expenditure to expand a ShotSpotter program that automatically reports gunfire in the city. The system, which currently covers half of Camden, will be expanded citywide and merged with the street camera network.
