Abstract:
A method and system for locating the source of an acoustic event, and a sensor for detecting and providing a time of arrival of an acoustic event produced in the environment, is disclosed. The sensor for detecting and providing a time of arrival of an acoustic event in the environment includes: (a) a microphone acoustically coupled to the environment, such that the microphone provides a signal representative of acoustic waves received at the sensor (22, 30), (b) a microprocessor, where the microprocessor is in electrical communication with the microphone, such that a digital representation of the signal is present in the microprocessor, (c) an absolute time clock in digital communication with the microprocessor such that the microprocessor can obtain synchronized time from the absolute time clock, and (d) a network interface in digital communication with the microprocessor such that the microprocessor can communicate over a computer network, wherein when a predetermined event is received at the microphone, the microprocessor obtains a time of arrival from the absolute time clock and transmits the time of arrival over the communication network.
