Rochester, NY Police Department to Deploy ShotSpotter Gunshot Location System

Rochester, NY – December 14, 2004 — The Rochester, NY Police Department today held a press conference with representatives from ShotSpotter, Inc., to announce that they have secured funding for and intend to deploy the ShotSpotter Gunshot Location System.

Using an array of small sensors placed in locations throughout the city, the ShotSpotter Gunshot Location System leverages acoustic techniques to pinpoint the location of gunfire within seconds. Confirmed gunfire events are immediately reported, through police dispatch, to officers on the street.

"Knowing the location of a gunshot so rapidly speeds our investigation and increases officer safety," said Chief of Police Robert J. Duffy of the Rochester, NY Police Department. "We are grateful to Representative Louise Slaughter for her considerable efforts in obtaining the funding for this important technology."

Congress recently approved a 2005 spending bill that promises millions of dollars for dozens of high-profile projects in the Rochester area. The Rochester Police Department would get approximately $310,000 for the ShotSpotter technology under this bill. Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-Fairport) was instrumental in securing the funding.

"Gunfire remains the single leading cause of homicide death in this country, and it is ShotSpotter's mission to help control it," said James G. Beldock, CEO of ShotSpotter. "We are pleased to be working with the fine officers and city officials of Rochester to make their citizens safer."

The precise coverage area and deployment dates of the system will be determined after the approved funding and procurement are finalized.
