SPRINGFIELD, MASS - Springfield police arrested a 37-year-old Old Hill neighborhood man late Wednesday night after the city's ShotSpotter audio-surveillance system registered a gunshot fired near his home.

When police officers responded to 56 James St., shortly before midnight, they saw a group of people on the porch and a spent .45 caliber shell casing on the ground, Capt. Eugene C. Dexheimer said.

They also smelled marijuana and further investigation led to the discovery of a .45 caliber magazine, Dexheimer said.

At that point a suspect told police that the weapon was his, and with his consent, police discovered a Hi-Point semi-automatic handgun inside the home, Dexheimer said.

John Yarns, of 56 James St., was charged with possession of a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, police documents state.
